The life and work of Edgar Degas
Edgar Degas (1834-1917) was a famous French painter and sculptor, considered one of the main representatives of the Impressionist movement. Edgar Degas was born in Paris, France, and studied painting with several famous artists of the time. His work is known for portraying mainly scenes of Parisian daily life, such as ballerinas in their rehearsals, horse races, cafes and women in their domestic chores.
He was one of the founders of the impressionist group, but unlike other members of the movement, Edgar Degas he was not so much interested in capturing light and atmosphere in his paintings, but in realistically representing modern life. He also used different techniques from those adopted by other impressionists, such as the use of more defined lines and the application of dense layers of paint. Als dieses Werk und seine Variation im Musée d'Orsay, Paris, Mitte der 1870er entstanden, waren sie, abgesehen von Historiengemälden, Degas' ehrgeizigste figürliche Kompositionen. Etwa zweiundzwanzig Frauen, Ballerinen und ihre Mütter, warten, während eine Tänzerin eine Attitude für ihre Prüfung ausführt. Jules Perrot, einer der bekanntesten Tänzer und Ballettmeister Europas, gibt die ausgedachte Tanzstunde in einem Probenraum in der alten Pariser Oper, die kurz zuvor abgebrannt war. Das Gemälde war 1872 vom Opernsänger und Sammler Jean-Baptiste Faure in Auftrag gegeben worden. Es war nur einer von einer Handvoll Aufträgen, die Degas jemals annahm, und er arbeitete zwei Jahre mit Unterbrechungen daran, bevor er es schließlich fertigstellte.
