A Sociologist in the Lords: The Parliamentary Career of Anthony Giddens
There is a claim, sometimes considered a truism, that sociology has a marginal place in Britain (see, for example, Holmwood, ; Turner, ). As with many claims for the UK’s ‘lack’ of intellectuals (see Collini, ), this can significantly downplay the positions of prominence sociologists have held. In a sprightly speech delivered last night at the London School of Economics, the New Labour architect and sociologist said that it was possible to have a clean energy revolution, just as mobile phones burst onto the scene in Africa earlier this decade.
So what’s stopping it? Corporations. Sceptics. Public apathy. The current socio-economic paradigm. CO2 “free riders” who would like to scrap the UK’s climate law.
It’s a dismally long list for a lecture about hope—but then Giddens, an advisor to Tony Blair during his tenure as prime minister, describes himself as an “irrational optimist” when it comes to climate change.

Anthony Giddens is one such theorist, and his work in sociology and political theory has significantly impacted contemporary politics, particularly during his time as an advisor to British Prime Minister Tony Blair. Having authored over 30 books and articles, Giddens is responsible for developing structuration theory and Third Way theory and is considered one of the more influential voices in socialist thought today.

Anthony Giddens was born to a lower-middle-class family in Edmonton, North London, on January 18, His father was a clerical officer at London Transport and kept very few books at home. However, Giddens was able to pass the plus exam, making him eligible to attend Minchenden Grammar School.
