Harriet Tubman (born Araminta Ross; c. or – March 10, ) was an African-Americananti-slavery worker, former slave, and humanitarian. She was also a Unionspy and the first black woman to ever lead an American mission during the American Civil War. She was born into slavery but she escaped. During her life, she made nineteen trips. She helped more than slaves escape.[1][2] She used the Underground Railroad.
When Tubman was a child in Dorchester County, Maryland, she was whipped and beaten by many different masters. When she was very young, an angry overseer threw a heavy metal weight at another slave. The weight accidentally hit Tubman's head. That caused seizures, headaches, powerful visionary and dream experiences. She had those problems all her life. Tubman believed the visions and vivid dreams came from God.

Harriet Tubman (–) was an American abolitionist and political activist. Tubman escaped slavery and rescued approximately 70 enslaved people, including members of her family and friends. Harriet Tubman's family includes her birth family, her two husbands, John Tubman and Nelson Davis, and her adopted daughter, Gertie Davis.
Tubman's parents—Benjamin "Ben" Ross and Harriett "Rita" Gene Ross—were enslaved by two different families. Their lives came together when Mary Patti son Broadness, Rita's enslave, married Anthony Thompson. Ben Ross, enslaved by Thompson, met and married Rit Greene. They lived together until about or when Rit and their children went to the Brodess farm. Ben was a timber estimator and foreman, and Rit was a domestic servant. Who Was Harriet Tubman?
Born into slavery in Maryland, Harriet Tubman flydde to freedom in the North in to become the most famous “conductor” on the Underground Railroad. Tubman risked her life to lead dozens of family members and other slaves from the plantation system to freedom on this elaborate secret network of safe houses. A leading abolitionist before the American Civil War, Tubman also helped the Union Army during the war, working as a spy, among other roles.
After the Civil War ended, Tubman dedicated her life to helping impoverished former slaves and the elderly. In honor of her life and by popular demand, in , the U.S. Treasury Department announced that Tubman would replace Andrew Jackson on the center of a new $20 bill.
