Is ‘The Lovely Bones’ Based on a True Story?
Saoirse Ronan landed her second BAFTA nomination for starring in Peter Jackson‘s 2009 mystery The Lovely Bones — and she was just 16. Ronan’s performance as Susie Salmon, a young girl watching over her family from purgatory, marked a major breakthrough in the young actress’s career. The film is based on Alice Sebold’s novel of the same name; but is it based, at all, on a true story?
The Lovely Bones follows Susie, a murdered young girl who travels to purgatory after her death. As she watches over her family, she has to decide what’s more important to her: her love for her family, or her vengeance against her killer. If she wants her family to heal, Susie will have to forgive her killer’s actions and move on into the afterlife.
The film sure sounds like a fantasy movie, so it would seem “true story” was off the table. But the answer may actually surprise you
