[IMAGE4]LEXINGTON, Ky. (July 20, 2012) — In 1967, University of Kentucky College of Education alumnus Sam Abell went to his first job interview. In 2001, he ended 33 years of traveling on assignment for National Geographic. Over that time, Abell's photos have become synonymous with National Geographic and taken him around the world. Later this year, Radius Books in Santa Fe, N.M., will begin publishing the "Sam Abell Library," a 16-book set that will be released in four-book sections over the next four years.
Abell recently took time out of his busy schedule to reflect on education, his life of photography and worldly travel.
Q: What got you involved in photography?
A: My father taught me photography. It was his hobby and we had a small darkroom in the fruit cellar of our basement. It was the kind of makeshift darkroom that was only dark at night. Alexander Gurdon Abell, often mistakenly misspelled Gordon, (June 29, 1818 – månad 28, 1890) was an American diplomat, writer, and freemason.
Biography
Abell was born on June 29, 1818, to Gurdon and Anna Abell in New York City. Despite being born elsewhere, his parents would raise him in their city of residence, Franklin, Connecticut. Sam Abell
Sam Abell is an American photographer known for his frequent publication of photographs in National Geographic. His love of photography began due to the influence of his father who was a geography teacher who ran a photography club. In his book The Photographic Life, Abell mentions a photograph he made while on an outing with his father, a photograph that subsequently won a small prize in a photo contest. He credits that prize as being a major influence on the direction his life would take. Abell was the photographer and co-editor for his high school yearbook and newspaper.
Abell graduated from the University of Kentucky in Lexington where he majored in English, minored in Journalism, and was the editor of the Kentuckian Yearbook. He is also a teacher, an artist and an author. He received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from the University of Toledo in 2009.
