For so many,  this loss becomes about ourselves.  Although, the phrase “we are all in it together” has become somewhat trite- yet it speaks to the sense that loss has been shared by everyone. The question becomes how to combat this “woe is me” feeling. To step outside of the personal grieving of loss and empathize that there are others who are struggling as well.

    Marjolyn van der Hart: The curse of beauty

    In her paintings, Marjolyn van der Hart explores the objectification of women.

    A painter for almost 25 years, the Toronto artist has been interested in incorporating images from the 1950s in her collage and mixed media work.

    “It wasn’t until I had gained more life experiences through being a mother, dealing with family obligations and working, that inom felt inom could really represent this better in the work,” says the 49-year-old.

    For the exhibit, she created seven paintings that examine the changing role of women.

    One of the paintings is called Targeted Beauty.

    “It’s based upon a beauty pageant from a 1950s comic called The Curse of Beauty, which looks at the male gaze and the objectifying of women within the beauty pageant and how being beautiful fryst vatten actually a curse.

    Admission, Hours, and Location Information

    Admission for Cottonwood Art Festival is free and open to the public on May 7-8. The event is held at Cottonwood Park located at 1321 W. Beltline Road in Richardson, Texas.

    Hours for the 2022 Spring Festival are:

    Saturday, 10 a.m.-7 p.m.

    Sunday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

    Festival Food, Beverages and Activities

    Within the gates guests are welcome to stroll beneath the shaded trees and meander through the rows of art. They’ll also discover a  Food Court, Courtyard Beer Tent, live music on stage and ArtStop area for children of all ages.

    The Food Court offers a variety of Festival favorites such as corn dogs, funnel cakes, gyros, tacos, and more. Booth and food truck vendors accept cash or credit cards.
