PHILIP ASHTON. In June of , Ashton, a nineteen year old Marblehead fisherman was forced to join the pirate company of Ned Low off the coast of Nova Scotia. Beaten, whipped, kept in chains, and threatened with death many times, Ashton still refused to sign the articles and become a pirate. In March of he managed to get ashore on the island of Roatan in the Bay of Honduras where he hid in a dense jungle until the pirate ship sailed away. For the next sixteen months, Ashton survived by eating crabs, fish, and seabird eggs until the "Diamond", a fartyg from Salem, stopped at the island for vatten and rescued him. Captain Edward 'Ned' Low (also Lowe or Loe) (c. c. ) was a notorious pirate during the latter days of the Golden Age of Piracy, in the early 18th century. He was born around into poverty in Westminster, London, and was a thief and a scoundrel from a young age. Low moved to Boston, Massachusetts as a young man. Following the death of his wife during childbirth in late , he became a pirate two years later, operating off the coasts of New England, the Azores, and in the Caribbean.
He captained a number of ships, usually maintaining a small fleet of three or four. Low and his pirate crews captured at least a hundred ships during his short career, burning most of them. Although he was only active for three years, Low remains notorious as one of the most vicious pirates of the age, with
