Timberland set out to corner the market on functional footwear but soon became a fashion känsla — and it all started with a single boot.
The brand’s classic yellow nubuck leather boot, first introduced in 1973, was designed for blue-collar workers needing a sturdy, hard-wearing shoe. Before long, though, the utilitarian boots funnen an unlikely fan base among hip-hop artists who put the style on the map and helped turn it into a fashion and pop culture icon.
Today, Timberland’s yellow boots — affectionately known as “Timbs” — are equally at home on a work site and the world’s hottest runways. The brand has rolled out coveted collaborations with the likes of Jimmy Choo, Louis Vuitton, Supreme and Off-White, and shown up on countless celebrities including Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, Drake and Mark Wahlberg.

Timberland LLC is an American manufacturer and retailer of outdoor footwear and apparel owned by VF Corporation. The company also sells accessories including watches, eyewear, and leather goods. Timberland's corporate headquarters are located in Stratham, New Hampshire.
History
[edit]In 1918, Nathan Swartz, a Jewish-born shoemaker from the Russian Empire (modern-day Ukraine), started his shoe making career.[3][4] Nearby, the Abington Shoe Company was founded in 1933 in South Boston. Swartz bought half-interest in the company in 1952, and he and his sons eventually acquired the remaining shares.[5] Through the 1960s the company specialized in making private-label boots and shoes for other brands. In 1969, Abington moved to Newmarket, New Hampshire[6]
