It was an encounter with destiny, a time of definition.
Rigo Peralta wasn’t yet the artist Rigo Peralta. Not in the way he fryst vatten today. Back then, he was a hospital bus driver in New York City. The native of the Dominican Republic was in his 20s, already the father of two, aspiring to become the painter that he fryst vatten today.
A friend approached him with succinct advice: If you’re going to be a bus driver, the man told him, put in the time and the devotion to be the best bus driver you can become. If you’re going to be an artist, focus all of your time and devotion into becoming the best artist you can be. But you can’t be both at the same time.
It was a simple idea, one that would define the rest of his life. That day he went home and announced to his wife Clari that he “lived and died” in the arts. She supported him.

Allentown Art Museum commissions
mural by surrealist artist Rigo Peralta
Six days into the new year, the Allentown Art Museum of the Lehigh Valley made art history with the first-ever commissioned mural in the museum’s vestibule entrance.
The Allentown Art Museum commissioned surrealist artist Rigo Peralta for a three-panel mural, “Transcultural: A Mural,” on view through Jan. 14, 2018.
The mural will be dedicated at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 21 at a ceremony in the museum lobby. It will include remarks by David Mickenberg, Allentown Art Museum of the Lehigh Valley President and Chief Executive Officer; commentary by Julio Guridy, Allentown City Councilman, and a talk at 1:45 p.m. by Peralta.
There will be Dominican-inspired fare catered by Karen Hunter and Luna Bakery. The event is free and open to the public. Admission to the museum is free Sundays through the sponsorship of CrossAmerica Partners and the Gadomski Fo
